Today I am extremely excited to share with you a guest post by Sarah of Sarah's blog. Her blog is one of my daily reads as I really enjoy her ramblings. These can include anything from her weekly loves to recommended movies and books, to growing strawberries and thoughts on dealing with depression. Go on over and say hello. And while you're there you can check out my guest post too (click here). Here we go!!
You remember when you were at school and everything seemed like such a long time away. You were excited to get out of school, start driving and go on your path wherever it might lead. At the time you probably had not thought about those who had inspired you onto the next step.
It might have been your family, friends, a teacher, a stranger who told you something you couldn't forget, whoever. There was someone who inspired you on. I can look back on my school years and remember certain teachers who influenced me. Possibly at the time though I didn't realise it. There were some teachers of course I wish I could forget but each of them became a test of my character. Part of who you are is from every single experience you've ever had, even your most hated teacher.
I've recently started tutoring classes and it's made me realise how much influence you can have on others' lives. You don't only help with tutoring the subject, part of it is to listen and advise them too. Currently I have a group in my class of 17-21 year olds and none of them are really sure what they want to do next or should I say what they think is “best” for them. They think they have to make this big decision right now and yes in a way they do but your life is a long time and mistakes are part of it. Of course it’s hard to explain that to them as they don’t want to be seen as failures. At that age I felt the same.
I didn’t realise that I didn’t have to make a decision about my career that would last for the whole of my life and as such I meandered through, which at the time seemed confusing and disjointed. Now I can look back and see that through all of it I had learned something. I love my current job but who knows what the future holds, I might decide I want to learn to be a doctor. Maybe. Who knows?
I’ve always been inspired by people who just got on with it, just said “Oh I’m just going to do it and I’ll deal with it if it doesn’t work out” and I got most of that from my friends. Of course some ideas don’t work but I know what I want, just sometimes I am not sure how to get there.
You’ll find that inspiration is around you every single day of your life; you just might not notice it. It’s only when you look back and think about all the things that got you to where you are right now that you’ll even think about it. Is there someone you should be saying thank you to?
Don’t let life pass you by without remembering these moments, they are what made you, “you”. Every single little thing that happens to you is part of you. Keep your eyes open and you won’t miss them.
Thanks so much Sarah for your inspiring words. Can you remember any specific moments that you think made you who you are today? Please share with all of us. Also get in touch with me caribbeanprincessmusingsATgmailDOTcom (using the normal convention) if you would love to guest post too! Have a great day!

This post was perfect for me right now. I recently turned 21 and am a junior in college. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed about the decisions that I am about to make...that I need to know what "the plan" is right now. Obviously, that can be a lot of pressure. It's good to be reminded that life is a journey and that I'll always be discovering new things and new dreams for myself.
Thanks for letting me post here today, and also glad that Alyssa found it helpful.
I wish someone had made me aware it's ok to make mistakes along the way!
I love mentoring people, I'm sure I might have inspired a few people along the way.
I often see the potential in people and in the past I've offered them a job and then you see them get in to the work and I look back and realise I made the right decision with that person.
Very rarely have I judged someone incorrectly I'm normally right first time sort of a sixth sense.
Life is one big adventure, don't ever have regrets, just go forward and learn from your mistakes.

I haven't really mentored but I have taught quite a lot and was involved in interviewing a research associate who I hope will do well in his new role.
For my first year medical students (my babies!) I tried to be a good role model to them and a good teacher. I wanted them to see that nothing should dampen their dreams and ambitions and that with hard work they could achieve anything! They did want to know how old I was but I never told them that. First lesson, never ask a woman her age. Second lesson, never ask how many filofaxes I own! haha. At the end of the last session many of them stayed back to say thanks and that I made epidemiology interesting and that they would miss me. I was so pleased I almost got teary! I am so lame!
:-)
There are a lot of people in my life who I cannot remember. But I remember ALL of my teachers, both good and bad!
