Anxious about E coli? What you really need to know.......

In the last few days, those of us in the UK and Europe would have seen the headlines regarding the E Coli outbreak in Germany caused by infected cucumbers

(Update 6/6/11 a mix of sprouted seeds, which are used in salads and includes lentils, alfalfa seeds, fenugreek and adzuki beans, could be the cause of the E. coli outbreak, although there is currently no laboratory evidence to support this link.)

Unfortunately it has been reported that hundreds of people have fallen sick, of whom a much smaller number have died. Understandably this is quite worrying, although sensationalist media headlines have played an important role in fuelling excessive levels of panic. I included the cartoon above as many of you may be feeling like the little boy it features. I have also been providing bits of information about E Coli via twitter and facebook. However I decided it may be useful to do a summary blog post which includes links to websites that I know contain correct information. Why? Because although I am a princess, public health is in fact my day job!

What is E Coli?
E coli is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in the gut of humans and animals. There are many different types of E coli, some of which live harmlessly in the gut (actually most of us carry the harmless strains). Others unfortunately can cause a variety of diseases (see next section for VTEC E coli). The bacteria can be found in faeces and can survive for extended periods in the environment.

What is VTEC or E coli 0157?
The bad E coli tends to be the VTEC strains. VTEC is short for Vero cytotoxin producing E coli. The most common type in the UK is 0157. The one causing the outbreak in Germany is 0104 (which is rare in the UK). They cause infection from mild diarrhoea to serious inflammation of the gut (severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea). A small percentage of people (2-7%), usually children or the elderly will develop a very serious condition called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) that can result in kidney failure. This condition is life threatening and can develop between 2 and 14 days after diarrhoea begins.

Another important fact is that very small numbers of the bacteria can cause disease. This makes it very infectious and so the disease can spread easily within families, in schools, nursing homes, hospitals etc.

What are the symptoms?
  • diarrhoea (about 50% of people will have bloody diarrhoea)
  • abdominal cramps
  • fever

How can I become infected?
  • eating contaminated food
  • drinking contaminated water or water that has not been properly treated
  • swimming or playing in contaminated water like streams or ponds
  • contact with infected animals directly or with animal poo (farms, campsites, petting farms)
  • contact with other people with the illness

How can I avoid becoming infected?
This is definitely an example where prevention is better than cure! There is no specific treatment for VTEC infection and in most cases the infection will clear within a week. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, avoid tea, coffee or fizzy drinks. Paracetamol is useful for pain relief. Antibiotics are NOT recommended as they can worsen complications. It is important to note that some people continue to shed the bacteria for a couple of weeks.

It is very important to practise basic hygiene such as
  • washing your hands regularly with soap after using the toilet
  • cleaning hard surfaces with disinfectant
  • cooking all minced meat products properly
  • avoid contact between raw and cooked meats
  • thoroughly washing ALL salad and vegetables that will be eaten RAW
  • not preparing salads using the same utensils used for raw meat
  • eating and drinking pasteurised dairy products
  • boiling drinking water if unsure of the source
  • not swimming in water that may be contaminated with sheep or cattle poo
Of course if you do become infected, it is important to contact your GP who will determine whether you will be treated at home or if you are ill enough to be taken to hospital. They will also inform public health agencies so that steps can be taken to control the outbreak or look for the source of the infection.

Her Royal Highness recommends 29/5/11....

Lovelies! How are you doing today? I am still away but I wanted to share a selection of my favourite posts from the last couple of weeks to keep you entertained. Here we go...

How do you react when things don't go as you planned? Do you get annoyed, frustrated or disappointed? Or do you get angry with everyone and everything? And just let it rip? Well this post from Celestine Chua offers 12 helping points for when things don't go your way.

One thing I had forgotten about my life back in Trinidad was the extreme pushiness of some of the menfolk scrubs. Some would simply not take NO for an answer! So I really enjoyed reading this open letter to the Guys who ask why we cannot be just friends written by The Wife of Man,Wife &Dog blog.

Do you use pet names with your partner/loved one? I do, and so does DH, but fortunately our preferred options are not included in this list of generic pet names for women used in the US. As only Zoe can, each one is dissected with a lot of sass and ever more snark! Heaven help you if you are called snuggle bunny or pussy cat. Ouch!!

If like me you love reading about how to find your passion then this post from RePsych will make your day. I explored the subject of passion previously here, spurred on by a great post written by Life Well Planned.

Are you in the mood for a summer retreat? Especially one that does not involve the hassle of flying? Well check out this post from the Shu Box to find out more!

This guy is an inspiration. Read his guest post on Problogger and weep. There is no reason why any of us should be making excuses for our own lives. You can achieve whatever you want. But you have to believe in yourself. And work hard!

And last but not least two posts on blogging which I found helpful....

How to build a thriving blog by being yourself.

And in case you missed it when I linked it earlier in the week.

How to Blog without a niche.

SITS girls are also running their learn how to blog better with ProBlogger programme! I found it really useful as a novice blogger so I would definitely recommend. Click here to read more.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Happy birthday Dear Hubby!

Image

Today is my lovely DH's birthday! As customary and since his birthday tends to coincide with another Bank Holiday weekend in England, I have whisked him away for a romantic getaway! If you have not yet been acquainted with my dear hubby then read here and here and this introduction.

Happy birthday DH! Thanks for adding to the happiness in my life :-)

Enjoy your Saturday! And there will be a scheduled post tomorrow.

To Flex or not to Flex... that is the question!

Dearies, do you remember that I said I WILL NOT BUY ANY MORE FILOFAXES? Well I am pleased to announce that I was strong, kept my word and I haven't increased my filo count. However I never said that I would not purchase the new Flex by Filofax. Which technically isn't really a filofax now, is it? And after the wonderful three part series on Philofaxy, how could a mere mortal like myself resist?

So I ordered the magenta pocket and A5 directly from the Neal Street Store as it is not yet available online. I plan to use the A5 for work and haven't set that up as yet. However I did find some time to organise the pocket Flex before DH and I headed off to the English Riviera for a short break........ Enjoy!

Leather look exterior.

Inside view. My pen fits perfectly and matches!

Notebook doesn't stay open this way.

But it does if I slip the cover in another opening. Clever!

Inside view.

Size comparison with Pocket Metropol.

So the Flex comes with the case, pen loop, small lined notebook and a jotter pad. I ordered a diary which unfortunately doesn't start until July (such a shame as I want to use it NOW!) Also my passport does not fit in it, which is rather disappointing. I will also order a contacts/ address book to complete it.

I find the grey inserts a little boring and wish they had colour coordinated these as well. I added some glitter stickers from my Scrapbooking stash to make it look more individual. It is so light and so much smaller than the Pocket Metropol Filofax and I will definitely be carrying my Flex with me AT ALL TIMES outside of work. The fact that there are no rings makes a huge difference!

I think this is an excellent and very flexible (ha!) product. Hopefully it will do well and Filofax will increase the number of options beyond black, grey and magenta. Oh and it would be great if they made it in leather too! If they did, I fear this would become yet another addiction..... Sigh.......

So what do you think of my new Flex? Please share in the comments. And have a great day!

Bunny love

Happy Thursday lovely people
You may remember that I mentioned I had an 'adopted' pet rabbit in this post. Well 'Bunny' as I had decided to call her (any future offspring of mine should be fearful of my naming skills!) actually belonged to my neighbour. But she had burrowed a hole under the fence and would spend hours in our garden. This delighted me enormously, to the extent that I would bore my work colleagues with her adventures as she was a bit of an escape artist. She loved exploring! It would also lead to conversations like this with my dear hubby.

CP- 'Ooh DH, Bunny is in our garden again!'
DH- 'Ummmm......' while reading a physics journal or watching tv.
CP- 'Ooh look she is munching grass!'
DH- silence.......
Is he ignoring me?
CP- 'Look, look she is hopping around now! Look..... LOOK!'
DH rolls eyes and sighs with the realisation that I will not leave him in peace until he responds
DH- 'But that is what rabbits do, don't they'
CP- 'Awww, she is sooooooo cute'
DH- 'You are not getting one!'
CP- 'I never asked for one. But now that you have mentioned it..... can we get one? Pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee??'
DH in exasperation- 'No we are not getting a rabbit!'
CP- 'Why are you so mean?'
DH- 'Who will look after it? I am not looking after a rabbit'
CP- 'I will help......... sometimes, when the weather is warm and it is not raining......'
As I live in the UK this basically means never! Ha. But DH is a clever man......
DH- 'You know you will NOT look after it. We are NOT getting a rabbit.'
CP- 'But look at how cute she is. You are a meanie!'
DH- 'I am not a meanie. You will not look after it!'
CP- 'If I promise to look after it can we get one? Maybe it could be a house bunny'
DH- 'Don't you have something better to do? Like blogging?'
And that is where I usually walk away in a huff!

So alas! I still have no pets. And to make matters worse I have not seen Bunny since I returned from Trinidad. She has just disappeared off the face of the earth and I fear that something terrible has happened to her on one of her adventures.

To ease the loss I will share with you some cute bunny pictures. There is also a site called The Daily Bunny which I visit to get my daily fix of rabbit cuteness. Enjoy!

Do you have any pets? And how do you think I can convince DH to let me get a bunny? Please share in the comments and have a great day!

P.S. I will be away on holiday until Sunday/Monday. But because I am so devoted to you guys I have some posts scheduled. And my iPhone and iPad will be accompanying me!

Filofaxes, Falafels and a little bit of this and that.

Image

Hello again lovely people! As you can see I was not Raptured. So I guess I need to continue with this blogging thing. And my list of good intentions has now become a living will. It is a bit of a shame though (I was really looking forward to my ascension) but it has made me recognise that certain people could NOT WAIT TO GET RID OF ME SO THEY COULD GET THEIR HANDS ON MY FILOFAX COLLECTION!! I will not name names. Just in case Person X has taken out a super injunction. But I will casually mention that the main culprit is female, owns an Amethyst Deco Filofax and lives in Holland. Please feel free to share this on Twitter! ;-)

Ok now that the messy bit is over with, I shall get on with today's post. Over the last few months I have been experiencing a nice steady growth in readership. Yay! Because this means more lovely people to interact with! Also several people have been interested in starting or restarting blogs. To all wanna be bloggers I say Go for it! I have been a blogger for almost 9 months now (so I am still relatively new) and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made! It is a lot of work (DH calls it my second job) but it has been so rewarding. In the near future I will devote an entire post to Why I blog? I also plan on sharing any interesting articles about blogging whenever I do my link love posts (aptly named Her Royal Highness Recommends). You can read a previous post here.

So I just wanted to do a little blog introduction for all the newbies. You can read about me by clicking the about and FAQ buttons below my header. I should admit that I don't really have a niche. But you don't need to have one as this excellent article suggests. I blog about anything and everything that takes my fancy. Although having a niche works for some people, I would definitely find it very restrictive and feel stifled. Also I am yet to experience writer's block (long term readers may think this is a bad thing! Ha). My very long tag line in my header should give you an idea of the variety of topics I cover. For a short summary of main topic areas check out one of my first posts here

Although I am a girly girl and I love pink, shopping and fashion (I also have an addiction to filofaxes, yes I said it, an addiction, as the truth will set you free!), I do not shy away from discussing topics that may be considered controversial as part of my 30 days of truth series. The introduction for that series is here. More recently I have discussed swearing and breastfeeding. But I have also talked about bullying, my experiences of being bullied (by a supposed 'superior') and overcoming this as well as some of the resulting anxiety. You can also explore my category buttons on the right side bar for Fashion, Filofaxes, Fun, Personal Excellence and Work. Or you can use the labels and archives in the right sidebar to find my older posts.

Ok so I think I have given new readers and friends lots to read and get started with. All the old timers, sorry long term readers ;-) should have seen ALL of these posts already (of course)! But if not please check them out. If you click on the Free Stuff banner you can download a pdf of all my 2010 posts. I would also like to thank all of you for being so very supportive of my writing. I always enjoy getting comments, tweets and emails from you. Each one is a treat for me; a little bundle of goodness wrapped up in words! And it makes me very, very happy! So I will always respond.

Last but not least, there are various ways that you can get my musings (see follow and subscribe on the right sidebar). You can subscribe to have it as a newsletter email, via facebook, twitter or via RSS feed. Or you can follow using google friend connect (see the followers tab on the right sidebar).

Ok so dearies please have a lovely day. And remember to share any thoughts or questions about this blog (and me! eek!) in the comments. Please also nudge me if you have added me on twitter or facebook and I have not added you back. There is a lot of spam on twitter so I don't automatically follow back. Also some people use different names for different social networks so I may not realise who it is contacting me!

Take care :-)

On swearing.... is it time for us to shut the falafel up????

Image

"The great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do."
 Walter Bagehot.

Friends, we have an epidemic. And no I am not talking about AIDS, obesity or swine flu, but the widespread use of extremely colourful words, words that used to be considered 'offensive' as part of our normal communication with others. Let's face it, profanity has become the norm, it is basically ubiquitous..... But I realised that things had gone too far when I overheard a conversation among children who looked like eight year olds (they were probably tweens) at a shopping centre last week. They threw around the f and c words so much I had to check my ears in a mirror to be certain that they had not actually turned blue! These kids were not fighting with each other; they seemed to be having a good time. So why did they think it was acceptable or even ok to use these words as nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns all within the same sentence? Why so much profanity? Because it seems like we are all doing it!! It is literally everywhere, on tv, on the radio, internet and in movies. It almost seems impossible to get away from it at all!

Profanity is now used to entertain us and everyone wants in. From Z listers on reality tv shows to presidents and politicans who say it as part of a misguided attempt to appear 'cool' or 'in touch'. Comedians say them to make us laugh and we all know that comedies won't be funny unless they let it rip a couple of times or more! I made the silly mistake of going to see Paul at cinema while I was in Trinidad. Basically it was about a weed smoking, obscenity spouting alien. And that was the sole basis of the 'comedy'. Soooo disappointing as it had potential. But clearly the scriptwriters thought liberal use of the f word made it funny enough. They didn't need anything else.  Maybe it was novel the first time, but by the 50th time it was just stale. Ok, the alien swears....... Funny......... Yawn.........

It is the custom for many songs to have a censored and uncensored version. One of my favourite songs 'Forget you' by Cee- lo Green is in fact a watered down version of the much more shocking 'real' thing. It seems profanity guarantees success, from hit shows by celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsey to number one albums for artists. So am I simply being too old fashioned or out of touch? Is there nothing wrong with the use of foul language? How else can we express our frustrations, our anger, our emotions? It is just a bit of harmless fun after all. Isn't it?

So ask yourself this. Would it be ok if your boss used any of these words with you? Or would you think it was abusive? The f word has become more acceptable culturally but how about the c word? Is the latter really more obscene than the former? Where should we draw the line as a society? And how would you react if your child used it to you? Or even someone else's? Would you allow your students to use it? I mean if it is ok for adults then why isn't it for children? Or do you think it is ok for men to use expletives but not women? As they say, if it's good for the goose then it's good for the gander.......

Personally I don't use swear words. You will not find them anywhere on this blog. I read blogs where there may be one or two thrown in but I am definitely turned off if every other word is a swear word. But I don't argue or make a fuss. I just click the x at the top right of the screen. Poor DH sometimes lets himself slip (he doesn't have my upbringing as a princess) which usually results in the stare of death from me. Sometimes I simply ignore him. Even if it is accidental. Why? Because I think it is offensive and for many people it is just a bad habit. There are other and better ways of expressing your feelings!

So lovelies shall we start a revolution? We can call ourselves PAUOL - People Against the Use of Offensive Language (maybe I need to work on the acronyms a bit). We will aim to use the many other words in the English dictionary to express our emotions.  We shall show future generations how to respect each other and that respect has to be earned and not demanded. And when we really need a release, we will substitute all bad words with the word 'falafel'. Why? Because it is utterly ridiculous! And it gives some idea of how silly it really is to use profanity just for the sake of it.

Some examples.
What the falafel is going on?
S(he) is so falafelling stupid.
Faaaaaalaaaaaaafeeeeeeel...... I am so falafelling bored.
Falafel you.

Ok it's probably time for me to SHUT THE FALAFEL UP! Haha!

Have a great day :-)

P.S Of course please share your opinions by leaving a comment. As usual I look forward to reading what you have to say! Who wants to join the PAUOL revolution?

The Rapture is coming........ the end is nigh....

The Raptor is coming! :-)

So dearies, it seems that the time has come for me to bid you farewell. I did not expect it to arrive so soon. After all I have enjoyed my blogging journey tremendously. And it is always so difficult to say goodbye to the people, places and things that you love. But as they say all good things must come to an end. My blog......, Lost......... even the world unfortunately. Yes the world. And for those of you who live under a rock have not heard the news, May the 21st 2011 is Judgement Day. And it has nothing to do with the Terminator. It is in fact 'The Rapture'. So today, Judgement Day will begin and the Rapture (which refers to the taking up into heaven of God's elect people) will occur. I should also probably let you know that the world will be destroyed by fire on October 21st. But that is beside the point.

Of course this means that in true CP fashion, I shall have to prepare. There is no need for me to worry about selling the house, taking out insurance etc as I am certain that Dear Hubby (DH) will not be ascending anywhere. Plus, I need someone to look after all of my filofaxes. So it works out well for me although I will miss him dearly. I will take my wedding ring as a reminder of the good times we had together.

However I do not expect to be lonely. I am sure some of you good people will also ascend with me. All except Philofaxy Steve, of course, for he is evil incarnate (he accused me of being Vicky in the previous post) and so he will have to remain here on earth!

Before I say goodbye I would like to leave a short list of good intentions. The word 'will' sounds too morbid. And this, my friends, is a joyous occasion.

The list

1. To my dear twin sister CP2, I leave my Michael Kors Hamilton tote bag. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have done.It is a shame that I have not yet purchased forced DH to purchase my Mulberry Bayswater which I know you would have loved. For this I am truly sorry.

2. To CP2, my other lovely sisters, sisters' in law and my Mum, I leave my collection of Radley, Fiorelli and Nica handbags.

3. To DH, I leave the house and everything in it so that he can do with it as he pleases.

4. I would like all my medical books, including the statistics and epidemiology ones to be given to my younger brother. It is my desire that he becomes that which is rare in medicine, an orthopaedic surgeon who uses his brain!

5. I would like all of my clothes and shoes to be auctioned on eBay and the money donated to charity.

6. With one exception, I bequeath my entire filofax collection to the wonderful site that is Philofaxy. My one requirement is that they must be used as prizes in any future giveaways. To bring some joy to those of you left behind on earth.

7. To everyone else, I leave my love.

Last but not least, I have a very important question to ask you guys. It is, as they say, the final 'hurrah' to my love of filofaxes! So dearies, I ask "Which filofax should I take with me during the ascension? The Deco or the Malden?" This will be the one exception in point 6 above.

It is my understanding that The Rapture will begin at 6pm everywhere so those down under will need to vote early. Please state your preferred option in the comments or vote using my last poll ever at the top right sidebar. Also, how will you be planning for the Rapture?

Til we meet again....

Au revoir
Adios
Adieu

P.S.

Just in case this doesn't actually come off I have a blog post scheduled for tomorrow.

Vicky's Vivacious Aqua Finsbury

Hello lovely people!

I am so pleased to share with you pictures of yet another filofax.  And no this one does not belong to me as I AM NOT BUYING ANY MORE FILOFAXES in the immediate future! So how does her royal highness indulge her filofax obsession? Simples, one just stalks nags harasses blackmails asks other people to share pictures of theirs. Easy peasy! hehe.

Anyways I am pleased to show off to you Vicky's vivacious filofax. Now Vicky is an academic public health registrar (just like myself) and from the first day we met I knew we had lots in common...... a love of bright colours, Radley handbags and Boden clothes! We were basically kindred spirits. However Vicky did not own a filofax....... as yet (gasp!) but she was easily converted to the cult of filofax . So it was not long before she bought herself this beauty. She was also kind enough to do a little write up of how she uses her filofax by section.  So go ahead and indulge yourself in these photos! I will never be one of those royals who gets accused of not contributing to the public good! haha.

My (well Vicky's) filofax

Front cover.
Front cover
It was a choice between aqua and raspberry (my work bag is raspberry) – I’m happy with the aqua but think I need a raspberry academic one now! (ooooh Vicky that is how it begins........A slippery slope to Filofax addiction....)

Front page.
Front page
Decorated badly with stamps of birds and flowers. The pocket inside the front cover is for random things that just get stuffed in there where there is nowhere else to put them….

Diary.

Diary
I have a week on two pages but am still trying to justify that separate academic filofax (see above) for academic doings.

Social and Garden section.

Social and Garden sections
This has my 'social to do lists' and my Garden section, a sign of reaching my fourth decade I think. The garden section has reminders of what I want to grow, what plants need potting up or transplanting etc.

Service and Academic Public Health section.

Service/Academic section
All my work related to do lists, short and longer term, including papers to read, notes from supervision meetings. Sometimes the work and social lists mingle but I try to stop this happening!

Ideas.
Ideas
Where I write down things that occur to me that I would like to do, read, buy or cook. This can be a useful reminder when I can’t think of what to have for dinner. Shopping lists go here too.

Addresses.
Addresses
I am rather ashamed that these are randomly written in and I haven’t yet used the A-Z dividers for them. And now you all know.

Information (not shown)
Passwords for my many email accounts, also telephone numbers, email addresses and pages of train times copied out as I do not have an iPhone or other mobile internet device and rely on my filofax when out and about. I seem to constantly prioritise everything else over upgrading my phone.

Back cover.

So did you all enjoy your peek into Vicky's vibrant filofax? I think the stamps she used are very cute and the colour is amazing. I cannot wait until she gets her second filo so that I could share that with you too. Thanks so much Vicky! And welcome to the club :-)

What do you think of Vicky's filofax? Did you get your filo-fix for today? Please share in the comments and have a great day!

Is breast best? My personal view.

Image

Ok so if I had a child who could scream this before the age of 6 months, I would be a wealthy woman! (after all the interviews, talk shows, book deals, meeting Oprah etc etc!) But I digress.....As promised this is part two of my series on breastfeeding where I hope to share my personal view. To read part one, where I expressed my professional viewpoint click here.

Let's get started.
Question: Is breast best?
Answer: Yes.

Ok so I already established this in the last post. Let's continue.....

Question: Will I breast feed?
Answer: Most probably No!

Have I made you gasp? What exactly are you thinking right now? Let me hazard a guess.... Some of you may want to know how I can say this when I know all the evidence in support of breastfeeding. Is it because I am embarrassed to breastfeed in public? Am I simply an anti-breastfeeding fascist? Do I think I am above breastfeeding?

Last year I played devil's advocate to a group of public health colleagues and expressed my personal opinion. I did it on purpose, not because I am attention seeking, but because I wanted to gauge the reactions of people who I knew to be  'reasonable'. I was not surprised by the responses of shock, of absolute horror. The statements were

"CP how could you say something like that?"
"You must be joking? Are you really being serious?"

For others there was simply stunned silence. I wondered if I had said Harold Shipman was a saint!

And therein my friends lies the problem.........

You see as far as I am concerned the decision to breastfeed is up to the mum/parents of the child. Why? Because exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months before weaning is a recommendation. It is the gold standard. But it is not mandatory or statutory.  I do not believe that women who bottlefeed are bad Mums. And they should not be made to feel guilty for this. Bottlefeeding may be less beneficial for your baby. But it is not HARMFUL, like smoking or drinking in pregnancy.

Also, there are many reasons why mums cannot or will not breastfeed. Let me list them for you:

Women with certain health conditions such as HIV or active TB
Women who are drug users or alcoholics
Women on specific medications such as mood stabilisers, migraine medicines, antithyroid medication or receiving radiation therapy
Women with chronic illnesses like severe diabetes, heart disease, severe anaemia
Women who have had breast surgery in the past or anatomical problems of the breast
Women who produce a low supply of breastmilk
Women who are uncomfortable with the act

Some you may consider to be good reasons, others may seem to be on shakier ground. There is also an issue concerning whether new mums are actually offered the support they need to breastfeed successfully. There are many cases where women have tried their best for their baby but received little support from health professionals. Sharon spoke from the heart about her experience in this post. I admire her bravery. Moreso as women are still ostracised for stating these views (sadly mainly by other women). Many work environments are still not conducive to breastfeeding. And this is a problem that needs to be addressed. Some mums also complain about how they get treated in public places when breastfeeding (unfortunately some have faced open hostility). The Equality Act came into force in October 2010 in the UK so should go some way to preventing discrimination.

But you must still be wondering. Why won't I breastfeed? I will not go into details but I have had two major operations in the past and I continue to deal with a chronic condition. I needed a lot of care from my family and DH after both of these operations and I had restricted mobility for a number of weeks. I also tend to take a long time to heal (seems even that aspect of me operates on Caribbean time). It is unlikely that I will have a normal delivery if I do get pregnant. So based on previous experience I know that I will need a lot of help. And as my immediate family is so far away, DH will pick up most of the slack. So I will need him to be involved. And he is kind enough to suggest that I should not put myself under additional stress of trying to express breast milk when poorly and extra hormonal.

So I do have an excuse. Maybe you think it is a valid one, maybe you don't. But the truth is, it doesn't change anything. It is after all my decision.  And as far as I am concerned women should not be victimised whether they choose to bottle feed or breastfeed. So to the members of the breastfeeding mafia who pour scorn on mothers who bottle feed I say back off! And to those who think it is acceptable to embarrass or belittle women who choose to breastfeed in public, don't be so inane (and stop acting as though you have never seen boobs before)!
