Fashion

Hello dearies
As you can tell I am interested in fashion. You can read my fashion posts. But I am an academic so the two things don't quite mesh do they?

Wrong......... I would choose to dispute that idea. I once worked in a department where the unit head made a comment to me as follows "You can't possibly be serious about academia if you have time to wear lipstick!"

I even had work colleagues advise me to dress down and look a bit more worn and stressed (unfortunately there was a culture of fear in the department). Now at that time I was a poor student on a meagre stipend so I did not have much money. I just made the most of what I did have and got the best bargains I could. And I thought looking nice was just as important as working hard. It helped me get through the day with confidence. Needless to say I did not last long there (although to this day I continue to wear my preferred berry shade of lip paint ha!). I moved on to a new environment where I felt accepted :-) And best of all I can say definitively that wearing lipstick has not stopped me from doing well academically. So there! Rant over!

Read this excellent article on Threadbared, called 'Mind over Malls or, Does Academia hate fashion?'. For the record I have no problem if you want to wear tweed, corduroy or elbow pads for that matter (if that floats your boat, well done you) . It is just out of order for you to judge me if I sometimes browse fashion magazines, enjoy shopping and love my handbags!

Nuff said!!!

Here are my top fashion posts. Enjoy!
